HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE
The Vision: A 40-Year-Old Dream
The story of Havilah College of Health Sciences and Technology is, at its heart, a story of faith, perseverance, and divine purpose. Its roots stretch back to 1985 — four decades before the institution would open its doors — when Pastor ( Dr.) Emmanuel Oluwayemi began fervently praying for his hometown of Ise-Ekiti. At a time when the twin local government areas of Emure and Ise/Orun lacked a single higher institution of learning, this man of faith dared to believe that his community deserved access to quality tertiary education.
For nearly forty years, that prayer remained a seed planted in the soil of hope. Ise-Ekiti, a town rich in culture and community spirit, continued to watch its young people travel far distances in pursuit of higher education. The absence of a local institution of higher learning was not merely an inconvenience — it was a barrier that limited the development of human capital and the aspirations of an entire generation.
Then, two years before the institution’s inauguration, Pastor ( Dr.) Oluwayemi received what he described as a divine instruction to personally take action — to establish an institution that would serve as a seed, one that would grow and in turn attract other centres of learning to the region. Responding to this call, he and his wife, Deaconess Blessing Oluwayemi, set out to transform four decades of prayer into reality.
Founding and Early Development (2024)
In 2024, the institution was formally established and began operations under the name Pilar College of Health Technology. From its very inception, the vision was clear: to contribute meaningfully to human capital development in Ekiti State and its environs through quality health and technical education.
The early months of the college’s existence were marked by the practical and painstaking work of institution-building. The founders worked to secure land, recruit qualified academic and administrative personnel, acquire laboratory equipment, and engage with regulatory bodies. Despite the challenges that accompany the establishment of any new educational institution, the college steadily grew in scope and ambition.
As the vision expanded, so did the decision to relocate and establish a stronger, more permanent footing in Ise-Ekiti itself — bringing the dream full circle to the very hometown that had inspired it. This relocation represented not a retreat, but a strategic and purposeful homecoming.
A New Name, A Renewed Identity
In compliance with regulatory and policy requirements, and in line with the broadened scope of the institution’s aspirations, the college underwent a formal change of name — from Pilar College of Health Technology to Havilah College of Health Sciences and Technology. This was not merely a bureaucratic adjustment; it was a declaration of identity and intention.
The name “Havilah” carries deep biblical significance, meaning “Land of Gold.” For the founders, this name encapsulated everything the college aspired to be — a place of immense value, where raw potential is refined into excellence, and where students are shaped into high-quality graduates capable of contributing to society at the highest levels.
Inauguration and First Matriculation (March 20, 2025)
March 20, 2025, marked a historic milestone — not just for Havilah College, but for the entire region of Ise-Ekiti and the broader Ekiti State. On this day, the institution officially opened its doors to students and held its inaugural matriculation ceremony amidst fanfare and great excitement.
The occasion was deeply emotional and spiritually significant for the founders. Pastor (Dr.) Emmanuel Oluwayemi and Deaconess Blessing Oluwayemi stood before the gathered community, students, staff, and dignitaries, and gave thanks to God for the realisation of a dream that had been nursed over four decades. The ceremony was a testament to the power of persistent faith and unwavering vision.
NBTE Approval and Federal Recognition (February 2026)
In a landmark development that crowned the college’s journey of formal recognition, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) granted official approval for the establishment of Havilah College of Health Sciences and Technology in line with the provisions of Act CAP E3 LPN 2004. This federal recognition formally established Havilah College as a duly authorized institution of higher learning under Nigerian law, and authorized the commencement of student admissions from the 2025/2026 academic session for the following academic programmes:
Programme
ND Health Information Management
ND Public Health Technology|
ND Medical Laboratory Technology
ND Community Health Technology
ND Pharmacy Technician
This federal approval represents the culmination of years of preparation, prayer, and institutional development. It formally positions Havilah College of Health Sciences and Technology as a recognised contributor to Nigeria’s technical and health education landscape, and opens the door for its first full cohort of students to begin their academic journey under an accredited framework.
Infrastructure and Facilities
From the outset, Havilah College demonstrated a serious commitment to providing students with a world-class learning environment. The institution currently operates on its main site of approximately 2 acres, accommodating academic buildings, laboratories, administrative blocks, and essential teaching and learning facilities.
Beyond its current site, the college has secured approximately 12 hectares of land (with just a five minutes’ drive to the current site), earmarked for future expansion, along with a 5-hectare plot designated for student hostels. Both parcels are supported by approved Certificates of Occupancy. The long-term development plan includes additional academic blocks, staff quarters, research facilities, sporting grounds, and other institutional infrastructure.
The college has invested several millions of naira in laboratory equipment to support training in Medical Laboratory Technology, and boasts modern facilities including an e-library. In December 2024, the institution was also successfully accredited by JAMB as a CBT Centre, underscoring its readiness in ICT deployment and commitment to meeting national benchmarks.
Leadership and Institutional Philosophy
The college is led by Pastor (Dr.) Emmanuel Oluwayemi as Founder and President, supported by Deaconess Blessing Oluwayemi. Academic and administrative operations are overseen by a competent and experienced Provost, alongside an experienced Registrar and a team of qualified management staff and lecturers.
The institutional philosophy of Havilah College rests on a three-pillar framework: the development of the head, the hand, and the mind. This holistic approach is designed to produce graduates who are not only academically competent but also practically skilled and morally grounded. The college maintains zero tolerance for laziness, immorality, and truancy, and aims to produce trained, competent, and godly health workers equipped to serve at a global level.
Significance and Legacy
The establishment and federal recognition of Havilah College of Health Sciences and Technology carries profound significance for Ise-Ekiti and the wider Ekiti State. For the first time, the communities of Emure and Ise/Orun local government areas have access to a higher institution of learning within their own locality — a development that addresses a longstanding educational gap and opens new pathways of opportunity for young people who previously had to travel far from home.
The journey from a prayer in 1985 to a federally approved institution in 2026 stands as a remarkable testimony to the power of vision and persistence. The NBTE approval in February 2026 did not merely validate the institution administratively — it announced to Nigeria that a new centre of health excellence had risen in Ekiti State, born of community love and sustained by faith.
Beyond its immediate educational mandate, the college is envisioned by its founder as a seed — one that will grow into a mighty institution and, in doing so, attract additional centres of learning to the region. Havilah College was founded not merely to educate, but to transform; not merely to train health workers, but to raise leaders who will make a difference wherever they go.
